Obituary for Raymond J. Savino




Raymond J, Savino, 76, of Tyrone died Wednesday May 7, 2014 at Homewood at Martinsburg.

He was born June 27, 1937 in Dubois, a son of the late Raymond A. and Elizabeth (Celinski) Savino. He was twice married first to Patricia Averill from 1960-1985 and she survives in Tyrone. He then was married to Deborah Plummer from 1985-2001. She survives in Tyrone.

Also surviving are 3 daughters Theresa Beisel and husband Keith of Tyrone, Barb Reed and husband Randy of Warriors Mark, Rhonda Zimmerman and husband Wes of Tyrone, a son Robert Savino and wife Brenda of Bald Eagle, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a step-daughter Chantel Ventura and fiancée Dr. James Garofalo of Duncansville, a step-granddaughter Grace Ventura and a sister Florence Bures of Scranton. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Sharon Red and a son-in-law Joseph B. Ventura.

In 1972 Mr. Savino purchased the former Tyrone IGA which soon after became Ray’s Riverside. He had worked for the Riverside Company in Dubois and State College before acquiring the franchise in Tyrone and became their youngest owner. The supermarket later became Ray’s BiLo which he retired from in 1996.

He was a member of the Tyrone Hookies, Howard Gardner American Legion, Anderson-Denny VFW, Tyrone Elks, Sinking Valley Country Club and the Treasure Lake Members Association.

Ray was an active supporter of the community and had hosted a well attended annual Halloween party for the town at his store for many years. He an avid golfer, fisherman and was a generous supporter of Special Olympics. He enjoyed sport memorabilia collecting and went on an annual trip to the Pittsburgh Pirate spring training in Bradenton, Florida.

Ray loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday May 12, 2014 at 7 P.M. at Feller Memorial Home with Rev. Charles Swenson officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Monday from 5 P.M. until the time of services.
