Obituary for Charles A. Rhoades

Charles A. Rhoades, age 86, of Tyrone went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Epworth Manor. He was born January 17, 1927 in Tyrone, the son of Michael and Hattie Miller Rhoades. On March 20, 1948 at the Fuoss Mills Christian and Missionary Alliance (now Faith Alliance) Church he was married to Shirley Rinker who survives. In March they had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Also surviving are three children, Karen Fogliano, Vero Beach, FL, Charles (Chuck) Allen Rhoades, Port Orange, FL and Connie Jo Boots, Hamden CT, five grandchildren – James Cochran, CT, Jordan Boots, CT, Kevin (Bo) Rhoades, FL, Tabatha Rhoades, IL and a deceased granddaughter Nicole Smollen and one great-granddaughter Adelyn Smollen whose mother was Nicole. Four sisters and a brother preceded him in death – Vera Gardner, Vivian Caueei, Elizabeth (Toots) Miles and Ruth Wigham, and Clarence of Tipton. Charles was the last of his immediate family. Also surviving is a brother-in-law William (Patty) Rinker of Greenwood and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Rhoades retired in 1989 as a freight conductor with the Middle Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad after 39 years service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner on the USS Grundy-APA III.
He was a member of Faith Alliance Church of Fuoss Mills and had served as an elder, and for many years served as a trustee and had taught Sunday school for the church youth. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Charles loved hunting, gardening, antiques and his grandchildren.
Funeral service for Charles A. Rhoades will be Friday, October 4th at 11 AM at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Reverend Paul Jacobson officiating. Burial with military honors by the Tyrone Honor Guard will follow in the Charlottsville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and on Friday from 10 AM until the 11 AM funeral service.
