Betty Ann Woomer, 87, of Tyrone died Monday, April 28, 2014 at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College after a brief illness.
Born March 27, 1927 in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo and Mary (Landsberry) McElwain of Unionville, Centre County, PA. On May 7, 1949, she married L. Vaughn Woomer at the Methodist Church in Unionville. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2002.
She is survived by three daughters: Suzanne (Alan) Wrye of State College, Barbara (Port) Williams of Huntington, and Mary Lou (Greg) White of Tyrone; one son, Rev. Mark (Rev. Sharon) Woomer of Monongahela; seven grandchildren: Nathan (Tori) Wrye of Media, Luke Wrye of Fredericksburg, VA, Heather Williams of Huntington, Jason (Jes) White of Altoona, Kelly (Howard) Moul of Carlisle, Anna and Julia Woomer of Monongahela; three step-grandchildren: Rev. Sarah (Rev. Ben) Robbins of Pittsburgh, Adam (Dabney) Robinson of Pittsburgh, and Claire (Craig) Dovyak of Bethel Park; two great grandchildren: Charlotte and Olive White of Altoona; two-step great grandchildren, Shiley and Coleman Robinson of Pittsburgh.

In 1945, she graduated from Bellefonte High School. In 1949, Betty graduated from Juniata College with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. She was a substitute teacher before her children arrived.
Betty joined the First Presbyterian Church in Tyrone on October 2, 1949. She was a very active member, most recently having served as an elder and deacon. She was involved in the Mariners group, volunteer church meals, and the annual church quilt project, and enjoyed playing the church bell carillon. In her younger years, she taught Sunday school and played the piano for choir and Sunday School.

For many years she was a member of the Tyrone Women's Club. She was a Friend of the Tyrone Snyder Public Library and most recently an active volunteer in the local history scrap-booking area. She was also member of the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary. In her earlier years, she served as a Brownie leader.

Betty enjoyed quilting, sewing, reading, needlework, gardening, traveling, and genealogy. She especially enjoyed family game nights and other family gatherings. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her kind and caring nature, and her strong faith.

Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 30 from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Thursday morning, May 1 from 9:00 until 9:45 a.m.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, May 1 at the Bald Eagle Cemetery at 10:15 a.m., with a Memorial Service following at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone, with the Rev. Mark Liller officiating.
