Obituary

William P. Smith, age 84 of Tyrone died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Epworth Manor. He was born July 27, 1928 in Tyrone, the son of T. Harry and Loretta Blyler Smith. On June 24, 1950 at the Hollidaysburg Episcopal Church he was married by Reverend Ralph Wolfgang to Betsy Garman who survives. Also surviving are two children, D. Brooks and wife Karen Smith of Altoona and Virginia Ann Smith and husband William Keeney of Philadelphia and two grandsons, Matthew Rippon, Pittsburgh and Jonathan (Ginger) Woodring, Yardley, PA and two great grandchildren, Andrean and Sylvia Woodring He was preceded in death by nine siblings – Alfaretta, Claude, Donald, Charlotte, Tom, Janet, Lelia, Naomi (twin) Ruth and David. He was the last of his immediate family.

Mr. Smith was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1947. He was a former member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He had been employed by Westvaco at the chlorine dioxide plant for 22 years and later as an outside salesman for Standard Supply and Equipment of Altoona from which he retired in 1991.

He was a life member of B.P.O.E. #212, and a member of Sinking Valley Country Club where he was fortunate enough to have twice made a hole-in-one. He enjoyed reading, poetry and music, and at one time had been a member of the Westvaco Choir and the Great Books Club. He was an accomplished Tyrone High School wrestler and an avid Penn State football fan.

Funeral service for William P. Smith will be Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 4 PM with Deacon Jack Hoffer officiating.
