William E. Shaffer Sr., 82 of Tyrone, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. He was born on April 14, 1940 in Altoona, the son of the late Edward J. and Verna (Zimmerman) Shaffer Sr. On November 1, 1961, he married Eleanor (Shultz) Shaffer who survives. He is survived by six children: Denny Michael (Lori) Jones, Roxann (Randall) Walter, Leeann (Bob) Walters, William E. (Shauna) Shaffer Jr, Jessica Ammerman, and Penny (Paul) Huss; one son-in-law: Brian Becker Sr.; six siblings: Mary Catherine Isenberg, Mary Theresa Schermack, Susan (John) Deversa, Gail Rose Anders, Jean Shaffer, and Edward Shaffer Jr.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his beloved Shepherd, Beggar "Bubba". He was preceded by a daughter: Abigail Becker; and a son-in-law: David Ammerman.
William was a graduate of Altoona High School. He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Tyrone. He served honorably in the US Navy and was commended by the Secretary of the Navy for his part in the USS Seadragon's successful completion of the first polar transit of a submarine from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean via the Polar Basin. He was also recognized as the Grand Marshall for one of Tyrone's Veteran's Day Parades.
He owned his own salvage business until retirement in 2017. He enjoyed cars and junk, hunting and fishing, and he loved cats and dogs.
An 11 am Mass for William E. Shaffer Sr. will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Tyrone with Father Michael Pleva officiating. Interment with military honors will be made following the Mass at Oak Grove Cemetery in Tyrone. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Central PA Humane Society, 1837 E Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602.
