Obituary

William "Bill" Engelman, age 101, died Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. He was born November 14, 1915 in Tyrone, the son of Adolph and Marie Bumann Engelman. On December 30, 1948 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church he was married to Hulda Tree who died in 2000. Bill is survived by his brother-in-law Harry Laird and 22 nieces and nephews for whom he became the Family Patriach . He was preceded in death by one brother Adolf "John" Engelman Jr. and six sisters and brothers-in-law: Eleanor (Frank) Hughes, Genevieve (Tim) Barnhart, Sister Mary Bernard O.S.F, Madeline Laird, Louise (Bob) Heinly, and Mary (Harry) Finley and two nephews – David Finley and Michael Tree.

Bill was a graduate of Tyrone High School Class of 1934 and had attended N.C. State College. He entered the Army in 1941 and served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy as an anti-tank gunman with the 805th Tank Destroyer Batallion and was the recipient of 4 Bronze Service Stars. In 1945 he was discharged from the Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a graduate of the Philadelphia School of Floral Design.

He and his wife Hulda became the owners of the Engelman Greenhouse and Florist Business and retired in 1988 after 40 years service. They were members of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. Bill was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the Tyrone B.P.O.E. #212, the Tyrone Howard Gardner Post #281 American Legion, the Anderson Denny Post V.F.W., the Gardner Club and the Tyrone Kiwanis Club.

Funeral Mass for Bill Engelman will be Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11:30 AM at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Father Jozef Kovazik as celebrant. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM and from 10 to 11 A M on Friday morning.
