Virginia "Virgie" Grace Werner, 91 of Tyrone, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023. She was born on January 29, 1932, in Runville, PA the daughter of the late Lee and Abby (Brower) Hoover. On February 2, 1949, she married Herbert Werner who preceded her in death on June 10, 2008. She is survived by four children: Curtis Werner of Dillsburg, and Ken, Brenda, and Terry Werner all of Tyrone; six grandchildren: Jesse, Hayden, Evan, and Carrie Werner, Lynda Fink, and Forrest Beals; and 9 great-grandchildren; she was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded by two children: Mark and Wayne Werner; and five siblings: Mildred Caber, Ellamae Eckert, Herbert Hoover, Curtis Hoover, and Ethel Wolfe.

Virgie left school her senior year to begin raising her family but in 1965 she went back and attended classes to complete school and receive her diploma, an accomplishment she was very proud of. Virgie considered herself a member of Tyrone Area High School class of 1950 and helped to organize class events and reunions. She was a lifelong photographer and reporter, working for both the Altoona Mirror and the Daily Herald. She was a member of Christ United Methodist church where she served in various positions and organized the church's military recognition events. She served for many years as president of the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary, was in the Tyrone Chamber and Rotary Club, and was the first female to sit on Tyrone Borough Council. She was also involved in the Tyrone Monogram Club. She was the recipient of the Hometown Hero award and many other honors and awards for her contributions to the community.

She enjoyed photography and always had her camera within arm's reach. She volunteered at the Tyrone Senior Center and often helped out with the Steinbeiser Hoedowns. She lived her life helping others anyway she could.

A 2 pm memorial service for Virginia Werner will be held on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Christ United Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Templeton officiating. Friends will be received from noon until the time of service. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Tyrone Eagle Eye News, and Christ United Methodist Church.
