Robert D. Sharer II, "The Ancient One", 80, of Tyrone, passed away Wednesday. He was born in Sewickley, a son of the late Robert D. and Dorothy G. (Hample) Sharer.
On Aug. 23, 1967, in Tarboro, N.C., he married Edith (Bell) Sharer who survives.
Also surviving are four sons: Robert III (Dusty), Eric (Jessica), Michael and David (Krista) Sharer; 10 grandchildren; three siblings: Carole S. Gill, Catherine D. (Richard) Gergely and Pamela B. (Matt Olley) Wagner; and brother-in-law, Ronald Ashcroft.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie L. Ashcroft and Dorothy A. "Robin" Olley.
Robert was a 1962 graduate of Tyrone High School and a 1964 graduate of Williamson Trade School where he received his degree in Interior Design.
Following school he served honorably as a Seaman in the United States Navy on the USS Independence.
He retired from PPG as a Sr. Quality Control Technician in 2008 after 40 years of service.
Robert was a devout member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Allegheny Ski & Sports Club, Elks, Legion, NMBA, and Friends of Raystown.
Robert was a devoted husband to Edie and his faith, family and country was the epicenter of his life. "The Ancient One" skidded broadside through life as he enjoyed skiing, kayaking, boating, disc golfing, mountain biking, camping, golfing, horseback riding on his childhood horse, Rascal, dancing, playing checkers, Rummikub, and he loved to challenge anyone to play ping pong. What Robert loved most of all was spending time with his family and creating memories with them.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2025, at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone; and from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with Father Michael Pleva officiating.
