Patricia Sue (Burns) Stoner, 86, of Tyrone died Sunday February 12, 2017 at her residence.
She was born September 12, 1930 in Stormstown, a daughter of Edward Russell and Minnie Gertrude (Black) Burns. She married Harry Reynolds (Ren) Stoner on October 15, 1950 who passed away on May 26, 2008.
Surviving are a son Steven Stoner (Christine) of Tyrone, two daughters, Cindy Bennett (Tom Hedberg) of Sinking Valley, Joy Ealy (Larry) of Adamsville, three grandchildren, Eric Bennett (Patti), Amanda Ealy (Shannon), Michael Stoner, six great-grandchildren, Gavin and Kason Woodward, Connor and Aidan Bennett and Lincoln, Tessa and Logan Munshower and two step-grand-children, Tobi Munshower (Les) and Thomas Hedberg Jr. She was the last of her immediate family preceded in death by twelve siblings.
Mrs. Stoner graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1948 and undertook extensive Continuing Education at Penn State University.
The Stoner's owned and operated the Fiesta Dairy Store, Tyrone for twelve years and were the original owners of the Coachlite Restaurant, Vail for eighteen years. Following her retirement from the food service business Mrs. Stoner accepted a position in the district office of State Representative Michael Cassidy. She then served for ten years with the Pennsylvania State Police, Hollidaysburg before accepting a position as Special Executive Assistant to newly elected State Treasurer Catherine Baker Knoll where she served for eight years. She retired from state service on January 2, 1997 before returning to Tyrone.
In May, 1997 she ran as a write-in candidate for Mayor of Tyrone. She was elected on both the Republican and Democratic ballots in the Primary Election and was sworn in as the first female Mayor of the Borough on January 5, 1998. She also served as President of Borough Council as well. She was re-elected for a second term and served for eight years retiring in January 2006 to have more time with her family.
Mrs. Stoner was active in Democratic politics most of her adult life serving as a member of the Democratic State Committee, Blair County Democratic County Chairlady and Vice-Chairlady, County Committeeperson, Secretary of the North Central Pennsylvania Democratic Caucus and a delegate to the 1980 Democratic National Convention in Madison Square Garden, committed to Senator Edward Kennedy.
Mrs. Stoner was the recipient of the prestigious International "2001 Athena Award", presented by the Blair Chamber Chamber of Commerce. The award celebrates the potential of all woman as valued members and leaders of the community. It is presented to individuals who strive toward the highest level of professional accomplisjment. She was also recognized by the Pennsylvania Federation of Business and Professional Woman's Clubs Inc. having been awarded a certificate in recognition
and appreciation of her public service.
A community activist, she served on many boards and committees including the Associate Board of Mid-State Bank, Northern I-99 Enterprise Zone Committee, Community Board of Epworth Manor, Allegheny Mountains Convention and Visitors Bureau, Blair County of Commerce, Metropolitan Planning Organization, Secretary of PennDOT's Citizen Advisory Board and Secretary of the South Central Counties Boroughs Association. She also was a member of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, Tyrone Historical Society, Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary, Tyrone Area Community Organization (TACO), the Monogram Club, Tyrone Regional Arts Council and board member of the Tyrone Community Players.
While devotion to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was her top priority in life, she was passionate about serving her community and the good people of Tyrone. She derived great pleasure out of doing meaningful things for her community and making a difference. Much of her attention as Mayor was focused on the revitalization of downtown Tyrone and improving recreational opportunities for the youth of the community, with whom she shared a mutual respect.
Funeral services will be held Friday February 17, 2017 at 11 A.M. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tyrone with Rev. Eric Shaeffer officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Feller Memorial Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. and at the church on Friday from 10 A.M. until the time of service.
