Obituary

Martha Louise Gingery Calderwood, age 99, died Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. She was born October 4, 1916 in Martha Furnace, PA, the daughter of David and Cecelia Gingery. On December 28, 1940 in Altoona she was married to Leonard F. Calderwood who preceded her in death July 9, 1988. Surviving are four daughters – Peggy (James) Harpster, Tyrone; Martha Calderwood, Louisville, KY; Deborah (Jack) Belani, Fairview Village, PA; and Mary Jo (Philip) Boal, Newport, N.C. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Robert, Briton and Brady Frantz; William Elliot Waite; Rachel Belani-Barker; J.J. Belani and Nicholas Belani; David (Jodi) Boal and Matthew (Jennifer) Boal; five great grand-children and seven nieces and nephews and her brother-in-law George (June) Calderwood. She was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.

Mrs. Calderwood attended the Tyrone Area school system, West Chester State College and the Pennsylvania State University. She taught fourteen years; first in Northwood, then at the 18th Street elementary school, then Grazierville school and Adams school. The line from Chaucer aptly applies, for she "gladly would learn and gladly teach." Martha enriched our lives and the lives of all those students she taught. She was a devoted member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she coveted our nation's history and its tenets.

A private celebration of Martha's life will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1650 Clay Avenue, Tyrone, PA 16686.
