Obituary

John E. Ochs, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2025, in his wife's arms at their Tyrone, PA, home.

John was born on February 10, 1943, in St. Louis Missouri to the late Mary F. (Barnes) and late Norman John Ochs.

John and Linda Ochs celebrated 62 wonderful years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and partnership that began in St. Louis County as high school sweethearts. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, support, and cherished memories. John is survived by his loving children, Gregory (Laura) Ochs of Michigan and Marcy (Joe) Chichester of Tyrone, PA, who brought him immense joy alongside his beloved grandchildren, Evan and Sarah. He is also survived by his sister, Deborah Needham of Missouri.

A proud graduate of the University of Missouri (Mizzou), John earned his master's degree in English. He began his career as a high school English teacher, sharing his passion for literature for 2 years. However, he soon transitioned to General Motors, where he dedicated 30+ years of service, rising through the ranks from his summer job at the Chevy Shell plant (St. Louis), to Supervisor of Labor Relations at the Tech Center and Warren plants (Detroit), completing his career as the Personnel Director at the Massena, NY plant. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were matched only by his dedication to his family.

John was a true mentor, always looking to share his knowledge and encouraging others to be the best version of themselves. He took great joy in attending his grandchildren's school and sporting events, supporting and encouraging them. In his leisure time, John found solace in the great outdoors, particularly while fishing in the beautiful Great Lakes, where he created lasting memories with family and friends. He passed his inherited love of fishing onto Greg, who was with him on the Au Sable River when they caught a 12 lb. steelhead. He was looking forward to the upcoming fishing season.

John's legacy of love, mentorship, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to come together to honor the remarkable man he was.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the family to establish a scholarship fund in John's memory and provide fishing equipment to youth.
