Obituary

Janet Louise (Gibbons) Hileman, 93, a resident of Homewood Living Martinsburg, formerly of Sinking Valley peacefully passed away May 13, 2026. Janet was born June 2, 1932, in Chest Springs, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Mildred Hammond Gibbons. Janet was a graduate of Tyrone Area High School. Janet married David C. Hileman on December 15, 1978. They shared 47 years together on their dairy farm in Sinking Valley.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Polly Snyder and Betty Henderson and a stepdaughter Lisa Pardus. She is survived by her stepson Ted and daughter-in-law Charmaine Hileman of Quarryville, Pa, and their two grandchcildren, David and Isabelle. Janet is also survived by three sister-in-laws, Carol Hoover, Joyce Burns (David), and Emily Bickle (Gary) along with eight nieces and nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, and one great-great niece. She is also survived by her special friend Charlene Detwiler who was instrumental in her care the last several years. Janet was a lifetime member of St. Matthew's Church in Tyrone. She faithfully attended St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church with her husband Dave. Janet was a lifelong accountant working closely with Harry Sickler Associates. After marrying Dave she divided her time between the dairy business and her accounting practice.

Janet was very active in her community and served as chairperson of the South Central area of PA Dairy(s) of Distinction, recognizing beautiful dairy farms in the region. She was particularly fond of the flowers and animals that surrounded her and Dave's homestead in Sinking Valley. Seeing Janet's transformation from an accountant to wrestling calves and milking cows was a sight to behold. She developed an incredible love for the dairy business and sharing her life with Dave. She shared Dave's love for Sinking Valley as a very special place to live. She also had a fond love for her companion "Fred", who was of great comfort to her in the final years of her life.

Janet had a special place in her heart for the young people of the Tyrone area.
David C. Hileman, 81, of Sinking Valley, peacefully passed away on June 7, 2026. Dave was born on August 28, 1944 in Altoona, Pa. He was the son of the late A. Marie (Williams) Hileman and Chalmer Hileman. Dave married Janet Gibbons on December 15, 1978, and shared 47 years together on their dairy farm in Sinking Valley until Janet's death in May, 2026.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Janet, and a daughter, Lisa Marie Pardus. He is survived by his son Ted and daughter-in-law Charmaine Hileman of Quarryville, Pa, and his two grandchildren, David and Isabelle. Dave is also survived by three sisters, Carol Hoover, Joyce Burns (David), and Emily Bickle (Gary) along with eight nieces and nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, and one great-great niece. He is also survived by his special friends Charlene Detwiler and her husband Jim, both of whom were instrumental in enabling Dave to stay in his Sinking Valley home for the last several years. Dave was a 1962 graduate of Tyrone Area High School and a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dave has served on numerous boards and committees including Fort Roberdeau, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tyrone Snyder Public Library, Penn Highlands Healthcare, and various 4-H and FFA organizations.

Dave loved Sinking Valley. A very quiet, articulate and unassuming man, Dave took great pleasure in his family, his homestead, the agricultural community, his church, and the environment surrounding his home including the mountains, wildlife, sunsets, and change of seasons that made Sinking Valley such a wonderful place to spend his life. Most of all, he dearly loved his wife Janet and was completely devoted to her through their 47 years of marriage. Dave was a man of few words. His actions spoke magnitudes as witnessed by his success as a dairy farmer and his everlasting legacy of philanthropic endeavors throughout the community.

Dave and Janet's passion was dairy farming as witnessed by the growth of Hilecrest Farms from a family owned business initially started and partnered with his parents to one of the more successful dairy operations in the Central Pa. region. Dave and Janet's success in the dairy farming business has been recognized with numerous awards including Outstanding Farmland Conservation Award, Excellence in Small Business Award, Agriculture Community Excellence Award and the Dairyman of the Year Award at the World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin. Dave's contribution to the agricultural community was defined by his support of various business and advisory boards. They engaged Dave in consulting and oversight capacities providing seminars and speaking opportunities throughout the United States, Europe and India.

Dave and Janet's success in the dairy business allowed the Hilemans to parlay their success into years of philanthropic endeavors benefiting the people of Central Pennsylvania. The Hilemans had a profound impact on furthering the lives and opportunities for young people in the area through various scholarships to high school graduates. Beginning in 2006, the Hileman's began a scholarship program providing hundreds of scholarships for high school seniors. In addition, the Hilemans made contributions as needed to regional 4-H organizations, the Joshua House, Tyrone Area Food Bank, Saint Matthew's Parochial School, and Saint John's Evangelical Lutheran Church among others. Dave and Janet were guided by Dave's philosophy, "No one can help everyone, but everyone can help someone." The Hilemans have quietly turned their hard work and good fortune into an everlasting legacy that will benefit the community after their passing through the establishment of the David and Janet Hileman Family Foundation. The Foundation will continue to provide for the funding of scholarships and support of educational and youth organizations in the area for the foreseeable future.

Friends will be received at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m and 6-8 p.m. on Friday June 12, 2026. A memorial service will be held for Dave and Janet at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sinking Valley on Saturday, June 13, 2026, beginning at 10 a.m. In keeping with Dave's lifelong commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate, it was his wish that in lieu of flowers or monetary memorials, you honor his memory by performing an act of kindness and/or generosity to create goodwill in your family and your community.
