IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Evie I
(Smith) Hinderliter
October 19, 1938 – September 5, 2024
Evie Irene (Smith) Hinderliter, 85, of Tyrone, passed away Thursday, September 5, 2024. She was born October 19, 1938, in Bellwood, the daughter of the late Casper J. and Gertrude Marie "Mae" (Himes) Smith.
She married Harold Ralph "Harry" Hinderliter of Ringtown, Schuylkill Co., at Tyrone's Saint Matthews Roman Catholic Church on June 6, 1959, beginning 50 years of marriage. Harry preceded her in death on September 13, 2009.
Evie is survived by daughters, Joan M. Darnell (Robert), Carol Hinderliter, Donna M. Siebels (John); son, William F. Hinderliter (Denise); grandchildren, Brian Hinderliter (Gloria), Michelle Stuhl (John Jr.), Dana Hinderliter; and step-great grandson, John Stuhl. She was preceded in death by son, William John Hinderliter; brother, Joseph Smith; and sister, Anna Duncan.
Evie was a devoted family matriarch who generously shared time, talent, and treasure to improve the communities she called home.
As a teenager, she worked at McCrory's in Tyrone and graduated from Tyrone Area High School in 1956. Shortly after, Evie answered the recruitment call from Bell Telephone in 1956 and moved to Philadelphia at age 17 as a switchboard operator. She retired from the company (restructured into Verizon) in network administration in 1997 after 41 years. She and Harry moved home from Philadelphia to the family farm in Sinking Valley in 2001. Evie became a beloved member of Sinking Valley Presbyterian Church.
She, with Harry, was active with the nonprofit Bell Telephone Pioneers of America and president of its Germantown Chapter, which included planting trees in Valley Forge Military Park annually. The pair also prepared and served meals at the Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia, and loved volunteering hosting bingo games and Christmas caroling in nursing homes. Evie served for 27 years as a troop leader for the Girl Scouts, especially enjoying camping trips.
In her golden years, Evie remained quite active, frequenting the Tyrone Senior Center, Reservoir Park concerts, and Lenten fish fries across the region. She treasured road trips and visiting family in Ringtown, Philadelphia, and beyond. Her upbeat personality and presence brought joy to all she encountered. Her family and friends give thanks for a life well-lived.
Viewing will be held on September 11, 2024, from 9-11 a.m. with services to follow, at Sinking Valley Presbyterian Church on 6709 Kettle Rd., Tyrone, PA 16686, with Reverend Earnest Walls officiating. Burial will take place at Logan Valley Cemetery in Bellwood. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Evie's name to Sinking Valley Presbyterian Church, mailing address 6444 Kettle Rd Tyrone, PA 16686, or Ronald McDonald House, 3925 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104.
