Mrs. Edythe M. Graves, age 91, of Tyrone died Friday, January 24, 2014 at Epworth Manor. She was born October 6, 1922 in Gainesville, FL, the daughter of Lawrence and Adell Barnes Caldwell. On February 19, 1940 at Mount Union she was married to Joseph N. Graves who preceded her in death May 17, 1994. She is survived by two sons, Joseph (Mary) of Detroit, MI and Richard "Sonny" (Elizabeth), Clearfield, PA, three grandchildren – Tracie, Shawn and Jenifer, six great grandchildren – Rodney Jr., Dominique, Camryn, Nyla, Graeson and Gabrielle and one great-great grandchild Malachi. Two sisters and a brother survive – Margaret (Earl) Pattillo, Altoona, Dorothy Price, Warrensville Heights, Ohio and Lawrence (Margaret) Caldwell, Jamaica Long Island, NY and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by three brothers – James, Charles and Robert. Also surviving is a special family friend, Mary Edna Lykens.
Mrs. Graves attended Tyrone High School and had been employed as a mender at Warnaco, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd and had served on the Administrative Council. She was a member of the Semper Fidelis Sunday School Class and the Fellowship Class. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of Memorial Chapter #58, Order of Eastern Star, Mount Union, having been very active for over 50 years. She served as secretary of Joanna Chapter for over 15 years, and was District Deputy and past Grand Matron, Grand Electra and Grand Central Trustee for 14 years. She was a member of N.A.A.C.P. and had served as treasurer of Tyrone Chapter #917 of A.A.R.P. She was a very active volunteer at the Tyrone Snyder Public Library.
Edythe was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tyrone Area High School football team.
Funeral service for Mrs. Graves will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Reverend Aden Wertz officiating. Interment will be at Blair Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. on Friday from 4 to 7 PM and at the church on Saturday from 10 to 11 AM. An Order of Eastern Star service will be held at 7 PM Friday at the funeral home.
