A. LeRoy Harper a resident of Juniper Village in State College, formerly of Tyrone, died Sunday June 25, 2017 at home. LeRoy was born December 5, 1922, the son of the late Melvin and Virginia Getz Harper.
Surviving are many close friends and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harper was preceded by two sisters: Norma Harper and Virginia Arnold; three brothers: Clair, Robert and Norman. LeRoy was the last of his immediate family. He was also preceded by a best friend, Richard Matter.
LeRoy was a 1940 graduate of Tyrone High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from January 1943 to February 1946 and was honorably discharged with the rank of technician 4. Following the military he began working for the Pennsylvania State University where he was employed as a manager of operations in data processing. He worked for the university for 37 years before retiring in March of 1984. During his retirement he was a volunteer in the snack bar at Mt. Nittany Medical Center and held the post for 24 years.
Mr. Harper was a life member of the Freed and Accepted Masons Lodge #700, The B.P.O.E. Lodge #1600, Bellefonte Royal Arch Chapter #241, The Knights Templar #33 and the American Legion Post #245 of State College.
He was a member of the St. Pauls United Methodist church of State College and he also attended church services at the Bald Eagle United Methodist church most of his life to be with his close family.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday June 27, 2017 from 7-9 PM. Private interment will take place at the Bald Eagle Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bald Eagle United Methodist Church, 2785 Bald Eagle Pike, Tyrone, PA, 16686 or to the Bald Eagle Cemetery Association c/o Sandy Chronister, 13643 South Eagle Valley Road, Tyrone, PA, 16686.
