Obituary for William Francis Vyhonsky Sr.

William “Bill” F. Vyhonsky Sr., 82 of Tyrone, passed away at home surrounded by family on Sunday, January 21, 2024. He was born in Altoona on June 4, 1941, the son of the late Stephen and Elizabeth Bezila Vyhonsky. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Judy (Ross) Vyhonsky; children: Stephanie (Rich) Forosisky of Johnstown, Bill (Carol) Vyhonsky Jr. of Melbourne, FL, David (fiance Julie) Vyhonsky of Mechanicsburg, and Emily (Jim) Book of Fallston, MD; 9 grandchildren: Alissa, Brandi, Christian, Ian, Angel, Marissa, Trey, Allie, and Tyson; 9 great-grandchildren; and a step-brother: Ed (Pam) of Johnstown.
Bill was a 1959 graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School where he was an outstanding basketball player. He was a retiree of Bethlehem Steel and First National Bank of Johnstown. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Tyrone and prior to that was a member of over 35 years at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church (now Resurrection Catholic) in Johnstown where he was very active helping with collection, counting, bazaars, Christmas trees and many other areas of service.
He also served his country honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict.
At Bill’s request there will be a memorial service held at a later date. A special thank you to the UPMC Hospice staff as well as his niece Penny Ross Miller for their care and service to Bill and his family.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or UPMC Home Hospice Altoona.
An 11 am Holy Mass for William "Bill" Vyhonsky will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Reverend Father Michael Pleva officiating. Friends will be received in the gathering space of the church from 10 am until the time of mass.
