Virginia S. Dollar, 96, Tyrone, died Monday.

She was born in Philadelphia, daughter of the late William J. and Lillian (Erkert) Snyder. On Sept. 20, 1942, at Camp Livingston, La., she married Dr. John M. Dollar Jr. of Adams, Mass. He preceded her in death on Feb. 23, 2001.

Surviving are two sons: Robert B. (Viola) Dollar Sr. of Tyrone and William A. (Mary Anne) Dollar of Gaithersburg, Md.; nine grandchildren: Jendy (Tony) Hammonds in Virginia, Erin (Ken) Owen in Utah, Robert (Gillian) Dollar in New Jersey, Melanie (Alek) Kapinos in Virginia, Christina Dollar of Washington, District of Columbia, and John, Matthew, Theresa and Kathryn Dollar in Maryland; six great-grandchildren: Kaden, Trinity and Shaw Owen, Claudia and Viktoria Dollar, Theressa Hammonds, and Veronica Kapinos; and a great-great-grandchild, Ashton Howard. She was a prominent presence in the lives of her children, and all generations of her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by each of them.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Snyder.

Virginia was a 1940 graduate of Philadelphia High School for Girls. She was employed by The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and later at Bell Telephone Co., before moving to Tyrone in 1946.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church since 1947 and of the Gertrude Black Sunday School class. She was also active in Round Table, Questers and the Red Hat Society. During her years in Tyrone, Virginia attended various Rotary activities with her husband and they opened their home to many Rotary Youth Exchange students. Along with traveling to other countries, Virginia enjoyed serving for many years as a chaperone on the Rotary Youth Exchange U.S. Summer Bus Tour.

A time of visitation with the family will be held on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, at Church of the Good Shepherd, 1650 Clay Ave., Tyrone, Pastor Tina Hawkins officiating. Interment will be made in Eastlawn Cemetery.
