Verva L. Miles, age 90, formerly of Northwood Tyrone, died Monday, March 28, 2016 at UPMC Altoona. She was born May 8, 1925 in Philadelphia, the daughter of Roy and Mildred Naylor Harter. On May 3, 1947 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church she was married to Karl E. Miles who preceded her in death February 14, 2004.
She is survived by three daughters: Mary Ann (Randy) Hennon, Beaver Falls; Martha Fernandes, Tyrone, and her fiancé Michael Luckett; Sarah (Andrew) Smith, Tyrone. Also surviving are a sister Leone Mills (Gerald, deceased) of Benton, KY; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son and an infant brother.
Mrs. Miles was a lifelong member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was a 1943 graduate of Tyrone High School. In 1946 she received her R.N. at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia. She was a Red Cross nurse and was employed as school nurse by the Tyrone Area School District.
In 1985 she was presented with the Tyrone Jaycees Distinguished Service Award. She was active as a Sunday School teacher and in various offices at her church. She helped with Meals on Wheels and volunteered at clinics giving vaccines when needed.
Funeral services for Verva L. Miles will be Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 3 PM at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Sue Arnold officiating. Private interment will follow at Bald Eagle Cemetery. Friends will be received from 1 to 3 PM at the funeral home.
