Obituary for Thomas Miller
Thomas Lynn Miller, 78, of Tyrone, passed away January 12, 2022. He was born in Tyrone on September 30, 1943, to the late Thomas Lynn and Phyllis Marge Miller. On July 28, 1964 in Cumberland, MD he married his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Hickes who survives. Also surviving are five children: Barbara (Chip) Gilliland, Lance (Becky) Miller, Wade (Jonelle) Miller, Maryellen (Sam) Venslosky, and Rachel (Mike) Walk; 10 grandchildren: Paige and Abby Gilliland, Cullan and Olivia Miller, Brendon and Max Miller, Brady and Michael Venslosky, and Ashton and Ben Walk. He was preceded by four siblings: Eugene, Delores, Margie, and Teet. He was the last of his immediate family.
Tom was a 1962 graduate of Tyrone High School and attended Colorado State University from 1962-1965 and graduated from Southern Utah in 1967. He worked as a physical education teacher at Tyrone Area High School for 37 years, retiring in 2005. Tom played football in both high school and college and continued playing semi-professionally for the Omaha Mustangs, Harrisburg Caps, and the Central Pennsylvania Whitetail Bucks.
He enjoyed watching and coaching sports. He coached football at Tyrone, Philipsburg, Bellefonte, and Mo Valley; baseball, basketball, and track at Tyrone; and youth football, baseball, and basketball in Tyrone.
Tom had a heart to help and teach kids. What he most loved was watching his grandchildren play sports.
Friends will be received at Feller Memorial Home on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, and on Wednesday from noon until the 1 pm service. A 1 pm funeral service for Thomas Lynn Miller will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the First English Lutheran Church in Tyrone with Pastor Sharon Erb officiating.
