Obituary for Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Swenson (Hamilton)

Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Swenson, 74 of Altoona, died on Sunday, October 17, 2021. She was born in New Kensington, PA on February 18, 1947, the daughter of the late Melvin Eugene “Jack” and Evelyn (Sandford) Hamilton. On June 19, 1971, at the Leechburg Graystone Presbyterian Church she married Charles Swenson who survives. Also surviving are two children: Mary Ann (Gunter) Volders, and Matthew (Layne) Swenson; one granddaughter: Elise Volders; one sister: Nancy (Larry) Schmidtmann; two nephews: Scott (Kim) and David Schmidtmann; and one great-nephew: Sirius Schmidtmann.
Sallie was a 1965 graduate of Kiski High School and attended business school in Pittsburgh. She worked at and retired from the Tyrone Area High School as a guidance secretary. After retirement she became a lay minister in the United Methodist Church Susquehanna Conference. She was presently serving at both the Mardorf United Methodist Church and the Fairview United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Tyrone chapter and then Altoona chapter 290 after the merger. She was a two-time District Deputy of Eastern Star District 9A. She was also a former member of the Kiwanis Club and the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation.
Sallie enjoyed knitting, traveling and watching The Price Is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She loved spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter.
Friends will be received from 9 until the 11:00 AM Celebration of Life service Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, at Fairview United Methodist Church, Altoona, with the Reverend Dr. Joleen Willis officiating.
