Obituary for Sarah B. Payne

Mrs. Sarah Payne, age 98, of Hollidaysburg died October 6, 2019.
She was born August 9, 1921 in Tyrone, the daughter of the late Charles E. and Ellen Murray Burns. She was predeceased by her husband, Philip J. Payne, whom she married on January 29, 1946 in St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church in Tyrone. She is survived by her two sons: Charles (wife Alicia) and Philip (wife Carol); four grandchildren (her P-TEAM): Tim (wife Andrea), Erin, Aileen, and Molly; and three great granddaughters: Antoinette, Alice, and Madison.
She was a lifelong resident of Tyrone, having been born in the family home on Cameron Avenue and living on Ninth Street, Washington Avenue, and Hamilton Avenue until moving to Garvey Manor in 2011.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Church. She was a graduate of St. Matthew’s School in 1935 and Tyrone Area High School in 1939.
Before marrying, she worked at the A&P in Tyrone. When her sons were older, she returned to work at Juniata Packing Company. Among her interests were needlework, ironing (she laundered and ironed, with love, the church linens at St. Matthew’s for over 40 years), playing cards, word puzzles, and baking cookies for her grandchildren. But her deepest love, other than her God and her Church, was her family who will miss her guidance and love.
A funeral Mass will be said on Saturday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church, Tyrone. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home on the morning of the funeral, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
