Obituary for Sandra "Sandy" K. Shanafelt

Sandra K. "Sandy" Shanafelt, 80, of Tyrone, crossed the Jordan with Jesus Saturday evening on September 9, 2023, at 9:50 p.m. She was met on the other side by her husband, Melvin K. "Sam" Shanafelt, who crossed on Aug. 21, 2014. They married July 2, 1960, in Tyrone.

She was born in Tyrone, a daughter of the late Joseph C. and Margaret M. (Kling) Stouffer of Hundred Springs, Tyrone.

Surviving are her children, Candy L. Fisher (John) and David K. Shanafelt; grandchildren, C.D. Gunnett (Shelby) and Sarah B. Shanafelt; a great-grandson, Fin C. Gunnett; a brother, Jerry Stouffer; and a special friend, Larry Mueller.

Preceding her passing: a son, Todd Joseph Shanafelt,; three sisters: Margaret E. McClellan, Zenith M. Selwitz and Lillian (Dodi) Woomer; and a brother, Joseph C. Stouffer Jr.

Sandy enjoyed traveling. She experienced many far off places, bus trips with friends, and Florida trips every year. She enjoyed Pickleball, walking, water aerobics, and dancing. As a VIM (Volunteer in Mission) Team Volunteer, she helped to rebuild disaster communities across the country. She also volunteered for the school backpack program.

She was a 1960 graduate of Tyrone Area High School, and retired from Mead Westvaco in 2001.

Sandy was a member of the Tyrone Elks Lodge and Grazierville United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, at Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with Preston L. Hutchins officiating. Interment will follow at Blair Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
