Obituary for Richard T. Hunter

Richard Theodore “Ted” Hunter (94) passed away unexpectantly at UPMC Altoona on Christmas morning December 25th, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born June 2nd, 1928 to the late Richard N. “Dick” Hunter and Bertha Hunter (Little). He was the oldest of six boys. He was preceded in death by four brothers William “Bill” Hunter (Norma), Charles “Jack” Hunter (Nancy), Paul Hunter (Brenda), and Robert “Bob” Hunter (Doris). He is survived by brother Donald “Don” (Lee) Hunter.

He married Betty Abrams in Mt. Union on April 24th, 1952. She preceded him in death November 12th, 2020. Surviving are his three daughters Hollie Hunter of Tyrone, Shelley Anders (Sherman) of Water Street and Becky Foust (Jeff) of Dover. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren; Chad Hunter, Sheree Anders Browne, Kristen Anders Hotmire, Jeremy Anders, and Kylie Foust as well as 7 great grandchildren.

He retired from the Chicago Rivet & Machine Company after 42 years of service. Ted was an avid hunter of deer and rabbits. He and his brothers built a hunting camp on 1500 acres by Petersburg. He had a couple hunting beagles that weren’t much help. Extended family spent many weekends having picnics, hiking, and playing horseshoes. His brothers gave him the nickname “Dead Eye” because he couldn’t hit anything including the peg in horseshoes.

He enjoyed bowling and was in a league at Splinters with his brothers. He was an avid Penn State fan but would frequently holler “Put Skirts On ‘Em” if they weren’t performing to his standards. If Penn State wasn’t playing and you asked him who he was rooting for, he would say “Whoever’s winning.” During the summers he took his family camping; Raystown, Prince Gallitzin, Shawnee and Watkins Glen to name a few.

Ted was a dedicated follower of Jesus. He was a member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church in Tyrone and later changed to Faith Bible Church in Bellwood with his brother Bob. He loved singing in the choir. He sang with such enthusiasm the choir told him he was making them off key and would maybe like being a soloist better. He loved being the highlight of singing solo and added a few comments before he sang. He even sang to the nurses and his doctor at the VA. He was also proud to announce that he was a veteran. He served 2 years active duty and 6 years in the army reserve.

He was quite the entertainer and character. In fact, he was singled out at Walt Disney World during the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review Show. After the passing of his late wife, he continued her love for shopping and decorating. His favorite stores being Hobby Lobby and “BosCos” otherwise known as Boscovs. Most recently you would hear him asking “What can I buy?” He would also go out to eat several times a week with family and friends, Pam and Robin Dick. Of course this had to be followed up with ice cream at The Meadows no matter how full he said he was.

By request of the family there will be no public viewing or service. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Pastor Ben Hoover of Port Matilda Baptist Church for his continued home visits and communion.
