Obituary for Mary Belle Mattern

Mary Belle Mattern, 94 of Tyrone and a guest at Epworth Manor, died Friday, July 17, 2020. She was born on February 6, 1926 the daughter of the late Merle Edward and Ethel (Schmidt) Garland. Mary Belle was first married to William A. Wilt and later to Edgar P. Dickson who preceded her in death in 1976. She then married Robert K. Mattern who preceded her in 1986. She is survived by two daughters: Deborah (Dan) Lucas of Shelocta, PA and Kathy (Gary) Barr of Tyrone; four grandchildren: Paul (Chrystal) Lucas of Hebron, KY, Chris (Jen) Lucas of Bellefonte, Stephanie (Douglas) Stone of Stanley, NC and Jim (Kassie) Barry of Cranberry Township, PA; six great-grandchildren: Breana Lucas, Marissa & Jamison Lucas, Allison & Hayden Stone and Vivian Barry. Also surviving are Jim, Tina, DJ & Joshua Hollingshead and Jason, Dawn & Butch Barr. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Howard J. Gardner.
Mary was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary (Howard Gardner Post), a past president and district president of the VFW Auxiliary (Anderson-Denny Post), past grayback and state grayback of the Cootiettes of the US and past chapeau of the 8 & 40. She was very involved with veterans’ orphans. She spent many hours volunteering at the VanZandt VA hospital and the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. She also spent many hours volunteering with the American Red Cross and helping with the blood mobile.
Mary worked at F&F Drycleaners before taking a position as a purchasing agent for the Tyrone Hospital, retiring from there in 1981 after 17 years of dedicated service.
Mary loved keeping up with the activities of her family. In her later years she enjoyed her word search puzzles and in the fall, Friday nights were spent with the radio on listening to her Tyrone Golden Eagles, Saturdays were her Nittany Lions and Sundays were her Steelers.
An 11:00 AM funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. with pastor Jason Mauk officiating. Friends will be received from 10 am until the 11 am service. Private interment will be made at Seven Stars Cemetery.
