Obituary for John Howard Sultage Jr.

John Howard Sultage Jr., 74 of Tyrone, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023. He was born in Altoona on November 20, 1949, the son of the late John Howard and Helen (Guerekovich) Sultage Sr. On November 1, 1978, in Altoona, he married Carole (Phipps) Sultage who survives. Also surviving are two daughters: Nicole Hahn and Christine Hutchison; three grandchildren: Evan Hutchison, and Mitchell and Sarah Hahn; and one brother George Sultage.
John was a 1967 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. He was working as a nurse in the ICU and became the first supervisor of AMED retiring in 1977.
He retired from the US Army in 1973 where he served honorably as a combat medic. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and a Purple Heart from injuries he sustained in Quang Tri during the Vietnam War.
He was an active member of the Tyrone VFW where he was Commander in 1976 and served in the Colorguard from 1976-77. He was also a member of the Tyrone American Legion and the Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Company. He was a drummer in the bands Echo’s and Fire Fox from 1974-78.
John loved boating, camping, Snoopy and Woodstock, and was an avid Penn State and Steelers Football Fan. He loved spending time with his family and was always a loyal son.
A 1 pm Mass of Christian Burial for John Howard Sultage Jr. will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Pleva officiating. Private interment will be made at Oak Grove Cemetery. Contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.
