Obituary for Gretta Lynne Czap

Gretta Lynne Czap, 84, of Tyrone, passed away May 15, 2021, after a brief illness. Gretta was born March 24, 1937, the eldest daughter of Malcolm Lynne and Ellen (Estep) Rorabaugh. On November 1, 1997, after a 40-year courtship (because she said you can’t rush into these things), she married the love of her life, George Czap.
Gretta is survived by her twin sister, Mary Ellen Jones; a nephew, Richard W. Stever, III (Kim), a niece, Amy Stever Kemp (Revel), and a great-nephew, Aaron M. Reese (Carrie), all of Tyrone; a great-nephew Ian C. Reese of Wellington, New Zealand; a great-nephew Richard (Rich) W. Stever, IV, Tyrone; a great-niece Olivia M. Stever, Pittsburgh; a great-great niece Sarah Reese Dean (Chad) and a great-great nephew Hunter M. Reese, both of Tyrone. Gretta is also survived by and was blessed to know her great-great-great nieces, Braelyn Dean and Sawyer Grace Dean.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, and nieces Ellen Marie Stever Delbaggio and Elizabeth Nicole Stever.
Gretta graduated from Tyrone High School in 1955 and was the honorary class president by keeping the class together through reunions and gatherings. Music was Gretta’s life-long passion. In her early years, she was a DJ at WTRN Radio Station in Tyrone with her own show, Red with Records. She would broadcast from the Tyrone Dairy Dip and ultimately was employed on one of the first-ever all-female DJ radio stations in Pennsylvania. She worked in the insurance business in Pittsburgh and then returned home to Tyrone in 1976 when her father passed. She worked at Spangler Motors, Tyrone, and retired in 1999.
Gretta was dedicated to her family, had a sharp wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and would introduce herself as “Gretta - that’s Gretta with two T’s, the second stands for Terrific”. The most important thing in Gretta’s life was her family and the world is definitely a better place for having had Gretta a part of it!
A Celebration of Life will be held a later date at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 1359 Pennsylvania Avenue, Tyrone, PA 16686.
Arrangements are under the care of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc.
