Obituary for Gerald L. Spangler

Gerald L. Spangler, 87 of Tyrone and formerly of Bedford, died Friday, December 3, 2021. He was born in Somerset on September 14, 1934, the son of the late Peter J. and Irma (Kimmel) Spangler. On September 8, 1962, in Bedford, PA, he married Eleanor Oldham who survives. Also surviving are two children: Jeff (Trina) Spangler of Tyrone, and LeeAnn (Darrell) Price of Port Matilda; four grandchildren: Kaitlin (Logan) Harper of York, Nicole Spangler of Pittsburgh, and Jacob and Will Price of Port Matilda; and two great-grandchildren: Charlotte and Layne Harper. He was preceded in death by one brother: James P. Spangler.

Jerry was a 1952 graduate of Bedford High School and a 1956 graduate of Gettysburg College. He was enlisted in the Army ROTC from 1956 to 1959. Gerry was the owner and operator of Spangler Motors in Tyrone, retiring in 2002 after 40 years of service to the community.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Tyrone where he served on the administrative council, was a trustee, and sang in the choir for over 50 years. He was a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #212, the Masonic Lodge of Bedford since 1959, Rotary international since 1962, the Jaffa Shriners since 1960, and the Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Company.

He loved the outdoors and hunting. Self-taught, he enjoyed painting with oils as well as carving life sized wooden ducks.

A 2 pm memorial service for Gerald L. Spangler will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021, at the Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Tina Hawkins officiating. Friends will be received from 1 until the 2 pm service at the church.
