Obituary for Elizabeth A. Beringer

Elizabeth A. “Lou” Beringer, 93, of Tyrone, a guest at Epworth Manor, passed away Friday,
March 24, 2023. She was born on November 12, 1929, the daughter of the late John W. (Sr.)
and Marjorie (DeLong) Bayer. She married Harold M. “Moose” Beringer on December 27,1952
at the First Presbyterian Church parsonage in Tyrone. He preceded her in death on July 8,
2018. She is survived by three daughters: Andrea Lou Beringer, Barbara Hazel Beringer and
Colleen Beth Warren; two grandchildren: Patrick Harold Warren and Rachael Marie Shaffer; one
sister: Marjorie Barner; three nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by a son:
Harold “Hank” Beringer in 1986; and three siblings: Nancy Wilt, Mary Jane O’Rourke, and
Joseph Bayer.
Lou was a 1947 graduate of Tyrone Area High School and continued her education at Indiana
State Teachers College graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1951. She was
an elementary school teacher in the Tyrone Area School District for many years, where she
taught several generations of second graders at Adams School.
Lou worshipped her entire life at the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a church
deaconess and taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Tyrone Elks Lodge No.212,
the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW auxiliary, and the Tyrone Area Historical Society where
she led annual historical walks through Tyrone for the School District’s fifth grade students. She
was also a volunteer at the Family Services, Inc. Domestic Abuse Shelter in Altoona and was a
Brownie Troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She belonged to the Tyrone Round Table.
Lou loved to travel and collected mementoes from each of her trips, which she
displayed, and referred to as “my world”. She treasured her vacations to the beach with
her family and dear friends, especially her trips to the Outer Banks. After their
retirements Lou and Moose took up golf as a hobby and joined the Sinking Valley
County Club where they made many new friends. Lou loved to play cards and enjoyed
participating in her card club nights. Lou adored her grandchildren and her “adopted”
additional grandchildren who were the grandchildren or great-grandchildren of friends in
Tyrone.
A lifelong resident of Tyrone, Lou cherished her community and its people. She was
happiest when she was in her home town where everything had meaning to her.
