Obituary for Donald L. Wilson Sr.

Donald L. Wilson Sr., 90, of Tyrone, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2023. He was born in Tyrone on April 5, 1933, the son of the late Joseph D. and Ida P. (Kerlin) Wilson. On June 23, 1956, at First Methodist Church of Tyrone, he married E. Romaine Bailey who preceded him in death on February 9, 2013. He is survived by four children: Christine (Lawrence) Boob, Karen (Grant) Gordon, Donald L. (Karen) Wilson Jr., and Michael A. Wilson; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by five sisters: Margaret Cunningham, Onah Miller, Anna Jane Etters, Betty Lou Baum, Glenna J. (Laird) Peck; and one brother: J. Dudley Wilson Jr.

Donald was a 1951 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. He held a machinist apprenticeship at General Electric Company, Erie Pa. He also acquired his BS degree equivalent in Vocational Education at Penn State University in 1971. He also had undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA as well as Graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, New Stanton, PA.

He worked as a machinist at Kenmore, NY as well as at Chicago Rivet and Machine Company, Tyrone, PA. He was an auto mechanic at Wilson’s Service Center, Tyrone, PA. He was a Vocational Machine Shop teacher at Chester Vocational High School, Chester, PA and held the same position at Tyrone Area High School for 32 years before retiring in 1995. He worked summers as a part-time Auxiliary Police Officer and Communication Dispatcher for the Tyrone Borough and worked part-time as a Blair County Deputy Sheriff.

Donald was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Tyrone, the Tyrone Historical Society, a charter member of the Tyrone Gardner Guards Drum & Bugle Corps, and a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.

He was a Boy Scout Webelos leader of Cub Pack 102, Logan School, and played four instruments in three area country western bands. He loved his wife of 57 years and wonderful family. He enjoyed researching two major family trees, camping, music, photography, eating out, and his lifetime interest in Bible prophecies.

A 10:30 am funeral service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at Grace Baptist Church with pastor Aaron Jeffrey officiating. Friends will be received on Thursday, May 25, 2023, from 4-7 pm at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. Private interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park.
