Obituary for Carol L. (Elder) Shope

Carol L. (Elder) Shope, 95 of Tyrone and a guest at Graystone Manor at Bellmeade, stepped into the glories of Heaven and the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.
She was born in Tyrone on Christmas Day 1924, the youngest child of the late Warren Abram Guyer and Ruth (Goheen) Elder. On Wednesday, May 19, 1948, she was united in marriage to Albert James Shope at the First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage until Albert stepped into Heaven on December 12, 1993. Surviving to cherish her beautiful life are 3 children: Mark (Laura Myers) of McVeytown, PA, Mona Springett (Mark) of Jacksonville, FL, and Julie Lantz (Robert) of Mechanicsville, VA; seven grandsons: Joshua (Ashley) and Joseph Bryant, and Sean Springett, Adam (Zoe), David (Jennifer), Brian (Tara) and Kevin Lantz; eight great-grandchildren: Logan, Hailey and Lillian Bryant, Ryland, Rush, John Robert, Ronan, and Indie Lantz. She was preceded in death by a son, Eric on June 11, 1973, and brothers Horace and Calvin, and sister Helen Gardner.
Carol graduated from Tyrone Area High School, class of 1943, where she was a cheerleader and was active in singing in the School Trio and numerous high school plays. Following high school, she worked as a clerk at Lugg & Edmonds and also as an operator at Bell Telephone. After marriage, she worked at the family business, Shope’s Garage, helping with parts inventory, and worked several years at Flavored Nuts in Tyrone. Carol was a member of Faith Bible Church, Bellwood, where she sang in the adult choir, and worked in AWANA and in the nursery. Previously, while a member at Grace Baptist Church, Tyrone, she sang in the adult choir, taught Sunday School, helped with many VBS’s, and was an original member of the Gracettes singing group. She was a 1976 graduate of the Altoona Bible Institute and also attended and sang at many Central PA Bible Conferences, held in the Altoona area.
On Saturday, September 12, 2020, the family will have a time of visitation at Faith Bible Church, 2682 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. Altoona, PA 16601, from 1-2 pm, followed immediately by a memorial service officiated by Pastor Ben Hoover. Arrangements are by Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that contributions in Carol’s memory be made to Faith Bible Church, PO Box 352 Bellwood, PA 16617 as well as Graystone Manor at Bellmeade, 1929 E Pleasant Valley Blvd. Altoona, PA 16602.
