Obituary for Barbara Jean Espy

Barbara Jean Espy, 79, of Tyrone, passed away at her home on Friday, February 19, 2021. She was born in Harrisburg on September 23, 1941, the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Marie R. McCloskey. On June 3, 1966 at the First English Lutheran Church in Tyrone, she married John Paul Espy Jr. who preceded her in death on January 13, 2010. She is survived by one daughter: Jamie McGlaughlin and husband Thomas; one daughter-in-law: Amy Espy; five grandchildren: Derek and Alek McGlaughlin; Tessa, John Paul IV and Lexi Espy. She was preceded in death by her brother: Joseph L. McCloskey. Her son, John P. Espy III, passed away shortly after her on the same day.
Barbara was a 1959 graduate of Camp Hill High School and a 1963 graduate of Grove City College where she attained a Bachelor of Arts in English. She was a high school English teacher, having taught at Tyrone High School from 1963-1968, as well as Juniata Valley High School from 1976-2003, where she was also the speech language advisor. In December of 2003, she and her husband, along with her son, started Espy Transport LLC.
She was a member of Lower Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder for three terms and was a member of the women’s organization. She was an honorary Rotarian. In her earlier years, she traveled to 49 states and many foreign countries. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed home decorating, gardening, reading and her beloved dogs and horses.
Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. at Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, February 25, 2021. Private service and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contribution in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Huntingdon County Humane Society, 11371 School House Hollow Rd, Huntingdon, PA 16652.
